What is mulch?

Mulch is a protective cover placed over soil, it helps maintain moisture and can help improve the condition of the soil.

What are the benefits of using mulch?

Mulch is beneficial in several ways, it helps maintain moisture, it also helps with weed control. If you use organic mulch the decomposition improves the quality of your soil. Finally mulch provides a nice decorative look to your landscape.

Are there different types of mulch?

Mulch comes in many forms, but there are two main categories: inorganic and organic.

Inorganic mulch usually consists of various types of stone, rock, or rubber. It does not decompose so it lasts longer and doesn’t need to be replenished as frequently as organic mulches. The down side is that inorganic mulch does not benefit the quality of the soil.

Organic mulches usually consist of wood chips, grass clippings, leaves, and other compost mixes. Over time it does decompose and needs to be replenished more frequently. On the positive side the decomposition improves the quality of the soil. Because of this benefit most professionals prefer to use organic mulch.
